Hadamard, Jacques

Hadamard, Jacques
(1865-1963)
   French mathe-matician. Born in Versailles, he studied at the Ecole Normale Superieure and the University of Paris. He taught at the University of Paris, and became a professor at the College de France as well as at the Ecole Polytechnique and the Ecole Centrale des Arts et Manufactures. He was a brother-in-law of Alfred Dreyfus and helped with his defence. In 1941 he fled to the US and later settled in England. His works include: Lessons on the Calculus of Variations, and Essay on the Psychology of Invention in the Mathematical Field.
